Hello everyone, so I've recently built a new computer and I figured I'd get Win 8.1, however I've started reading...Microsoft wants Windows 8 users to log into their computers with a Microsoft account. Now I hear this is optional? But if you don't... You don't get to use some of the features. Can anyone give me some more details on this?

Now considering I try avoid having a Microsoft account in the first place because they will soon enough ask me not just for a phone number and to link multiple accounts together, but a blood sample as well, I'd like some additional information on this. I value my privacy and Windows 8 and Microsoft in general just seems like a privacy nightmare in the making for the past few years.

What to do?

The use of your Microsoft account is used as a more secure means of securing your system. When it comes down to it though the only places that you really would need it are in the Store app, some other modern apps and for synchronizing your settings between devices. Windows 10 will use the same requirements.

The only catch is if you are in the Insider program and running the test builds of Windows 10 you will need to authenticate using your Microsoft Account in order to maintain the Insider license.
