I'm in the midst of building a system and I started wondering about audio connectivity.

The mobo will be an MSI X99S SLI Plus with built in audio. An optical S/PDIF is provided.

The video card will be an MSI GTX 970 and, at first, I'll be using the HDMI output to a monitor
with speakers. The monitor also has a S/PDIF output so when I have the $$$ I can get a 7.1 rig.

So:
Can I drive the monitor's sound from the HDMI?
.....if so: is there anything I have to do in setup

How does the sound signal get to the video card?
(in the olden days we'd run a jumper cable from the sound card).

Solution
No jumpers needed. You should be fine with just hdmi unless for some reason the monitor wasn't equipped with a dac and needed a 3.5mm input.

What kind of sound sys? If pc speakers use 3.5mm. If home theater use another hdmi out on the gpu. For surround on optical all equip would need to support compressed dd signals on optical and not all do. Its an option but you need to be a bit more specific.
