I assume you are using HDMI to connect to an external monitor. I had the same problem with windows when using HDMI cables. Try connecting your headphones to the sound out jack on your external monitor.

This problem cannot be fixed. I have the same problem. I've gone on several forums and asked for help. I know they try, and I'm not demeaning anyone. They'll tell you to update drivers. They'll tell you to reset default audio output even though default box won't click when it's set to headphones. Oh, and don't forget to make sure your headphones really work, because you're not smart enough to figure that out. There is only one solution to this problem. Buy a new laptop.

While many are spinning your wheels, the answer is simple.

Click on Control Panel:
Click on Sound:
Click on Headphones
make the headphone default by right clicking and choosing "Set as Default".

Now you have headphone or peripheral speakers coming from jack. When you unplug the exterior jack -
the laptop speakers default on. Really simple folks.

Thank you, Wiggle Room. That solution was one of the first things I tried. We're way past that.
