I have a new Samsung home theater system. I have it connected to my TV with an HDMI cord, and when I watch a Blu-ray, the picture comes up and the speakers all work great. However, I can not figure out how to get the sound to go through the home theater system when I am watching FIOS. I have 4 HDMI ports on my TV (vizio, approx 3 years old) but only one HDMI port on the back of the bluray/HTS box and only one HDMI port on the back of my FIOS box. All three seem to have the ability to connect an optical audio cord. Should I get one and plug one end into the FIOS box and the other end into the bluray/HTS box? I'm so frustrated.

the dvd player is likely part of the home theater system correct? (this is one of those htibs [home-theater-in-a-box] i'm guessing)

the hdmi on your home theater might be output only not input. in your manual what does it say your inputs are?

also do your home theater and tv support hdmi-arc ?

Yes, my TV does have one HDMI (arc) port. This is the HTS I have:

The bluray player has one HDMI port on the back. I have the bluray player (which all the surround sound speakers are connected to, besides the two wireless ones in the back) connected to the TV with an HDMI (into the arc port). Then I have my FIOS box connected to the TV with a separate HDMI cord. The FIOS box also has only one HDMI port. My TV has 4 HDMI ports.

When I watch a bluray, the picture and surround sound work great. But when I switch inputs back to the cable, I can't get the sound to play through the surround sound, it only wants to play through the TV speakers. I tried turning the tv speakers off, but then I just get no sound at all.

you will always get sound from the htib since it is part of the actual home theater.

as far as i can tell your home theater lists audio return channel (arc) support so if you are connected via hdmi to the tv's arc port you should be able to get it working.

in your tv settings under setup and hdmi there should be an option to turn on hdmi arc or control for hdmi. similarly on your home theater system control for hdmi or the arc function should be set to on.
