No audio will play through anything I plug into my laptop's headphones jack, the computer seems to recognize that something is plugged in (the volume level changes), but that's it. The built in speakers work fine

It has a detachable microphone, but I almost never use it, everything was working fine until about an hour ago.

Is it a two-cabled or one-cabled headset? If it is 2-cabled it will not work unless you plug it into an audio/mic combo jack. If you do not have one you will need a splitter cable.

That's the problem. I experienced the same issue a while back. If you have a headset that uses one cable for both audio and mic you can only plug it into a combo jack, which are only found on laptops moreso than desktops. You need something like this http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-headsets-separate-headphone-microphone/dp/B004SP0WAQ

According to your original post:

"No audio will play through anything I plug into my laptop's headphones jack"

So you are plugging it into a combo jack? Not a headphone jack?
