Sound not Switching between Headphones and Monitor.

Hey all, could you please help me out? I've been having this with my computer problem for a while now and am looking for a solution. What I want is for all the audio I receive to either come from my headphones or come through my speakers without having to mess with some settings. Currently only the default device plays no matter what else I do. If I want audio through the monitor I have to set that as the default device and vice versa for the headphones.

I currently have
an Asus Xonar DG sound card
an AMD Radeon 7870 gpu
an Asus Monitor
a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones

My monitor is connected via HDMI to my gpu and is not connected to the sound card in anyway. My headphones connect to the front of my tower to the jack directly, which is connected to the sound card.

Since I primarily use my headphones, I set my headphones as the default device. When I unplug them the monitor does not take over. In fact, it seems like it's still trying to send the audio to the headphone jack because the green bars that indicate music should be playing are still moving as if it were plugged in.

If I set my monitor as the default device, it will play music but if I plug in my headphones, it doesn't even flinch.

I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem, but the headphones have worked elsewhere. In any case something is not being communicated that should be and I hope that you guys will be able to help me out. I've read other people's forum posts and a lot of them are having partial or no sound coming from one or either devices, but both of mine work fine they are just not switching like they should.

You have 2 sound devices. 1 is the GPU - through the HDMI. The other is the integrated sound card. The fix may be to not use HDMI sound on your monitor, and then connect an audio cable between the onboard sound(on the back of the PC), and the monitor.

ok so currently I have a bunch of disconnected devices that are all technically "displays." If I run a cable such as for S/PDIF then one of those may come up as "connected" and I'll be able to use that as the sound source? Making sure I have that correct. I'm not sure if I have a cable like that lying around since it didn't come with the card, so I might have to go to the store tomorrow.
