MSI GS 60 Heat Issue

Hi All,

I have a brand new MSI ghost with the i7 broadwell processor.
When streaming video or surfing the web the CPU temperature gets up to 50 degrees celcius.
It makes me nervous trying to game. I thought the problem with heat got solved.
any advice for cooling?

Most laptop use CPUs with a 15 Watt TDP or lower.

The quad core mobile i7s are mostly 47 Watts. Partly due to having 4 cores instead of 2, partly due to higher clock speeds, partly due to lower part yields (easier to get 2 cores working at a low voltage than 4 cores). So temps will hotter than you're used to with other laptops.

If you don't need the full performance of the i7, some tricks you can do to lower temps are:

■ Turn off hyperthreading in the BIOS.
■ Limit the clock speed via the power profile. Control Panel -> Hardware -> Power Options -> (pick a power profile or make a new one) -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings -> Processor power management -> Maximum processor state. Lower it from 100%. Lower percentages decrease the max GHz the CPU will run at. Putting it at 99% will turn off turbo boost.
■ Disassemble the laptop and re-apply thermal paste (I do not recommend this on the GS60 due to the inverted motherboard).
■ Undervolt the CPU with Intel XTU.

50 degrees Celcius is actually quite cool for a laptop like the GS60. I'm a computer technician, and have worked on many GS60's. The GS60 can handle temperatures of about 90C before it starts throttling, and is designed to handle temps up to 90C. anything above 90C and you have a problem, but 50 degrees really isn't that hot at all for a laptop like the GS60.
