I'm about to move into my apartment at school, and I currently have an around 8 year old pioneer tv "monitor" and onkyo tx sr605 receiver. In my apartment we will not have a cable box, just a coax cable from the wall. I'm not sure what provider my roommates have but its already set up through comcast or directv. As far as I know the receiver and monitor have no built in tuner, so is there any external tuner I can buy that would work for this receiver. I looked around on amazon but it says these tuners only work on over the air broadcasts, which I am assuming are the free "local" channels. So is there any way to get a tuner that would work with comcast/directv/dish from a coax cable coming from the wall, preferably with an hdmi or component out, and universal remote control support.

Pretty much all content that goes through the wires now will be digital and encrypted so you'll need a box from the service provider to connect to it. If you want to buy your own, there devices that support cable cards but you will need to contact the service provider and check what will work with the service.

I understand what you mean but that's not quite my problem. If I were to take a tv that has a coax cable plug in the back of it and plug it into the wall, I could use that tv to watch all channels I receive from my service provider, no cable box required. But my problem is my tv nor auido receiver have a coax cable plug, so I'm looking for an external box like a cable box that can act as a tuner. I would like to just get the directv box but my roommate already has the service set up and didn't get a cable box with it.
