"Is there any way WHATSOEVER I can modernise my dsc-wx350 camera to send back to my computer, or load to cloud, direct from the field?"

Solution
I understand what you want to do and hopefully someone who has done this or knows how to do this will post a reply/solution.

These Samsung cameras have what Samsung calls "Smart WiFi":
Samsung DV150F
Samsung NX3000

Unless I am mistaken you would still need a mobile hotspot device for this to work.

At home you shouldn't have to go through a phone or PlayMemories to save a file to your computer provided you have an SD card reader. If you have an SD card reader you should be able to drag and drop images from the SD card to the folder of your choice. I can create a tutorial for this if this is something you don't already know how to do.

There is another option which would negate the need to depend on WiFi for transferring photos in the field where you may or may not have a signal to be able to transfer the files to a cloud based service and that is a Memory Card Back-up device. You can get one such as the Digital Foci Photo Safe II OTG (500GB) for around $150 which is portable and has a rechargeable battery thus allowing you to use it in the field. When you get home you should be able to connect it to the computer and transfer the files from it. A plus for this type of device is that you would not have to use a "smart" phone to store and transfer the files.

Hello again Ken.
I don't have any trouble getting photos of my camera and onto my computer at home Ken; it's that I need to download my photos out in the field/street as fast as possible from my CAMERA there and then. Any downloading to a phone or stopping to take out and insert a mc is not instant enough. I can do what I'm enquiring about with a smart phone, but like I've said, I hate them. I would prefer a combination of a small 'smart' CAMERA and a basic 'talk' phone. Unfortunately, the WX350, albeit being a wifi camera, is not capable of doing what I thought it could - download DIRECT to home computer or 'cloud.' If there really is not a solution, perhaps someone can recommend a camera that can download direct without any messing about. Are ANY Samsung's capable of this?
