External graphics cards are a waste of time and most likely will not work with your computer in the first place.

With laptops, upgrading big components like the GPU is usually not an option - you're basically stuck with what you have. On top of that, you most likely have an integrated GPU so upgrading is definitely not an option.

you can upgrade a laptop to the maximum spec it was sold for from dell at the factory. for example I got my inspiron n5010 with a first gen i3 and integrated graphics. from there I went on google to find what options this laptop had. I found it could hold upto a intel first gen i7 740qm and amd radeon hd 5650m. the graphics card is soldered to the motherboard, so I had to buy a new motherboard and cpu from ebay and also a new heatsink. I spent around 20 hours total when upgrading my laptop but it is now a beast for every day work despite being 5 years old.

heatsink took a lot of trouble as I had to make sure I had good contact and use special thermal pads and thermal paste. temps will kill any laptop.

so the answer to your question is YES but it is EXTEREMELY hard to do and unless you are an avid computer rebuilder I would NOT do it.
