Have you tried the DVD player with a different TV? Does it work?
I suspect it would have been cheaper to get a new DVD player than the RCA-HDMI cable...

HDMI to RCA cables do not work. They are a breakout cable for very limited applications on PCs.
If your TV and DVD have composite video (yellow) and audio (red and white) RCA connections these should work. In some TVs the component video (3 RCA connections)
are shared with the composite video so you have to set up the TV menu for composite. If the DVD has component video out this will give you a better picture.
