Will this laptop be able to play Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag/GTA 5 at low settings (or at all?)

Hello, Good day mate !

Actually 840M is a very decent adapter fro light gaming. Actually m gpus at common are aimed for light gaming. So don't expect ultra settings. But yes both games would be playable with medium settings, Or if you are lucky enough high. GTA 5 asks for beefy gpu and your 840m would give a decent frame rate on low.

It should. Maybe even at medium with 2xMSAA or high with trilinear. Laptops aren't really meant for big gaming so you should be good. Also depending on your budget try to get a MSI Apache or even the Apache pro. They could play games pretty well are out 45-60 frames on high with 2xMSAA
