I am struggling to pick between the above laptops. More from a long term issue than spec differences. My main requirement is a laptop that can take upto 32gb ram for running vms etc but can also play the occasional game (nothing too demanding as i have my ps4 for that).
I can find various flavours of the asus and msi to suit my needs and would prefer the asus based on its cooling and quietness but am concerned about what would happen if the cpu or gpu developed a fault outside of warranty. As i understand it the msi has more components that can be changed but the asus cpu/gpu is soldered meaning a complete new unit or hefty repair bill.
Any thoughts?

You are correct about the ASUS being quieter and having much better cooling than the MSI. I had the previous model ASUS (G75), and it ran about 10 degrees celcius cooler than my MSI under the same conditions. The cooling system in the G750 seems to be pretty much the same as the old model. Yes, both the cpu and gpu are easily replaceable on the GT70. It is actually a very easy laptop to work on. Sound is superior on the GT70 as well, if that matters. Hard to say which is the better machine. I was tempted to get the G750 when replacing my G75. The only reason I didn't was because I wasn't fond of the matte rubbery finish of the laptop.

P.S. The RAM is also very easy to replace on the MSI (don't know about the ASUS). Two slots under the bottom panel, and two slots under the keyboard. Takes maybe 10 minutes to replace all 4. Also forgot to mention, that while my MSI runs about 10 degrees warmer than my ASUS, there is a turbo fan button on the MSI which brings the temps down to the same range as the ASUS. But it also sounds like a jet trying to take off when activated, LOL.

Right now I am using an MSI laptop for 2 years and after one year my fan broke. I had to send it back to the factory and when my laptop came back it was so slow! I can't even start games anymore now and this laptop is only 2 years old. So I would recommend to get an asus instead of MSI.

(I have a MSI gaming series ge60)

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated. My old laptop was an MSI and to be fair I never had any issues with it but back then I wasn't thinking ahead like I am now in terms of longevity of the components etc. I am swaying towards the ASUS but just don't want to get stung 2 years down the line when it's out of warranty and the GPU dies! Probably over thinking it and worrying unnecessarily. I really like the look of the ASUS and what I've heard from other people, it just doesn't sit well knowing you can't change the GPU or CPU.
Cheers
