Is it true that if you leave your web browser open you can get a virus/trojan/etc?

For example, if I open FF to a website (for the sake of example) tomshardware.com, and leave it open all day while I afk, can it cause me to get a virus/trojan/etc?

Does it increase my chances of getting a virus/trojan/etc?

What about being hacked? Does it make it easier or increase my chances of being hacked?

Solution
nope, tomshardware is a clean site.

other sites though you could catch something fishy from them, doesnt matter though if you leave it open or not, usually bugs come in on the first load has nothing to do with how long you leave the site opened.

Anytime you are connected to the internet you can get a virus. Anytime you open an e-mail you can get a virus. Anytime you introduce a file from a USB, CD, disk whatever you can get a virus. The internet is a two way street .... just like you access a site, you can be accessed too.

It is therefore important to have AV, malware protection and firewall engaged (and not the ones built into Windows) engaged at all times.

My web browser (google chrome) is open 24/7. Whenever my computer is on, i always have a tab open for tomshardware, youtube, asus ROG forums, and more. If i was watching an episode before i go to sleep, it will be up on the same page up until the point when my computer goes to sleep.
