I did some more digging, and am currently looking at these two laptops:
1 -

2 -http

Can anyone say which of those is better, and why? Also, do you know of a specific laptop (toss a link!) that is better than those, within the price range? My only concern with the above is the 5400RPM hard drives, though I'm really not sure if that'll slow things down or not. I'm used to an SSD now, and I really never knew the real world difference between 5400 and 7200.
Looks like you are looking for a smaller system. Those are OK but that 5400 drive would be slower than even a 7200 drive one, not even counting an SSD. For brand quality, Lenovo is better than Acer.
You can always either replace the drive yourself and restore the system onto that, or go to the vendors web site and you should be able to customize the builds a bit.
Yeah, the 5400RPM HDD kills it for me - $1k is too much to spend on something that doesn't offer an SSD.
I'm really quite disappointed with the market right now, I can't find a single laptop around $900-$1k that meets the specs I'm looking for. CyberPowerPC had some GREAT spec laptops, but the company has absolutely terrible reviews, so I'm greatly turned away from them.
As for looking for a small laptop, that was coincidence, I'd almost prefer a 17'', but 15.6'' works too.
Are there really no laptops with:
i5 OR i7
320GB SDD (or higher)
8-16GB or RAM at 1600Mhz (or higher)
GTX 860M (or close to, better or worse, dedicated or not (Iris Pro?))
Backlit keyboard (would be cool at 1k, but not needed)
I find it VERY hard to believe that doesn't exist, but I'm not seeing it. Amazong and Newegg both don't seem to offer anything, and my Google searches aren't turning up much else, aside from CyperPowerPC, but I already covered that.
