You'll find little to no difference in raw computing power between the two. The 5th gen may run cooler allowing you to utilise more of it's performance but that'll be up to the laptop manufacturer more than anything else.
My advice is go for whatever is the best price for you.

Unless you are going to use the Integrated graphics I'd stick to the 4th gen and get a 4720HQ than say a 5500u. (I made that mistake recently. 2 days later returned laptop to get the 4720HQ)

You will not go wrong with the latest tech. Whether your using the integrated graphics or discreet graphics. You will get better through put with the 5th gen to the graphics whether you go with the integrated or discreet. Maybe not a really big difference but a difference. Your budget will be the deciding factor ultimately. I never tell people to go with older tech, due to it being obsolete when you buy it.

As above there are not a lot of difference. Make sure to get a super graphics card. You can benchmark cup several places and you will see that high end cpu's (i7) have not improved a lot in speed the late years, see several places incl here https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ - however graphics cards and cup power consumption have improved a lot.

I never recommend a laptop for gaming, but if you do go for a laptop for gaming you will want the strongest gpu you can get. Laptops are never as powerful as a desktop in performance in gaming. Remember that each newer version of a game usually needs more horse power from your gpu. What Jungstar and Selina_miller said is both true. Go with the best discrete graphics you can to get the best performance, then the processor.
