Hi all,
I have a Sony VAIO VGN-AR71ZU which needed a new battery. I brought one here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Battery-5-200-mAh-black-PCG-8111M/dp/B008B22ZHU/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1428571414&sr=1-1&keywords=Battery+5.200+mAh+-+black+-+for+Sony+Model+PCG-8111M

On receiving the battery I put it in the laptop and all was fine for just under an hour. In fact the battery life (according to the Windows system tray) didn't reduce at all. Then the laptop died. Now if I turn it on with just the new battery it stays on for around 5-10 seconds before cutting out. If I have the charger plugged in as well the battery LED flashes orange rapidly and the system tray shows a red cross through the battery.

Obviously the battery could be dead, in which case I have already contacted the supplier and will get it replaced, but is there anything else it could be. I have a clean Windows 7 install, with no Sony bloatware, so some suggestions of Sony battery monitoring software being the culprit don't apply to me as I don't have any installed.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated :)

It sounds like it could be going into or stuck in sleep mode as the battery is low or not charging.
Have you tried a hard reset to the laptop, by removing the battery and power lead holding the the power on button down for 30 seconds to a 1 minute.
If you manage to get the laptop booted go into control panel, power options and turn all options to never turn off.Sony might have a desperate feature control power options you may need to turn off.
