rig: 4.4ghz 2500k, 2x4gb 1866 CL9 ram, various HDD's & SSD's, MSI GTX760 2gb, GIGABYTE GA-P67X-UD3-B3
main monitor: ASUS VH242H 23.6inch 1080p (60hz)
movie screen: Panasonic VIERA U25 42" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV TC-L42U25
win7pro x64 fully updated, latest drivers and klite codec pack

problem: when watching movies (only 1080p BR copies) from my 2tb movie drive (seagate ST2000DM001) on my 42inch panasonic, there are frequent yet random frame drops. CPU/GPU/RAM usage is pretty minimal.

movies played on 23.6inch monitor (DVI) are just fine.

any work-arounds or suggestions as to -why- this happens? its drives me mad, and no one else even seems to notice.

could my storage drive or the sata controller its on possibly be the issue? i wouldnt have imagined thered be an issue, and all other performance metrics are A-OK.

help!

Does your movie drive have anything else or can people access it across a network? If so, then try disabling that and see. It kind of sounds like the drive gets busy doing something else and causes a small delay in the video data which causes the jump you are seeing.

If it is really just on the TV and not the monitor, does it happen if you span a window across the two screens and are they plugged in to the same video card (ie, you don't have it set up like your monitor on your GPU and TV on your on board video)? Does your TV have an option for a game mode on the input you are using? Possibly disable the 120Hz features like smooth motion or whatever it is called on your TV to avoid the TV processing the signal.

Do you use the windows indexing service? If so, try disabling it for that drive. Do you have windows Aero on, or just running a basic theme? If not, then try enabling it.

What video player do you use? Could you try another player and see if that helps?

Also, you mentioned you have lots of drives available, if you move the data to another location, or especially on to one of the SSDs does that solve the issue?

dang, thats a wealth of stuff to try. good job! the movie drive is solely a movie drive, no network access or swapfile for it.
my mobo doesnt have iGPU support, so its all connected to the gtx760.

never tried to span a video across the monitor and tv, dont know how to though im sure i could find results on a how-to via google.

indexing is off. aero is on.

tv does have various modes (gaming included i believe), never thought about that. how would leaving it on gaming mode affect regular TV watching (u-verse hdmi 1080p out to tv).

i assumed that it was settings/hardware related, so i havent tried any other software players since the issue doesnt bother my main screen. do you have any personal suggestions for a software alternative to the klite codec pack?

Do you have another cable you can use to connect to the TV? Perhaps another HDMI cable (want to rule out physical problems)? Go ahead and try the gaming mode on the TV but I suspect that is not the problem.

so after spending a bit of time playing around with the tv's settings only for the stutter to NOT rear its ugly head, i decided to refresh this firefox tab to see if anything new had come up.

low and behold, the stutter seems to start when anything other than the video window is highlighted...but still stutters randomly and not necessarily in conjunction with anything else being done on the system.

so, somehow it seems to be a processing priority issue maybe? seems odd considering cpu/gpu usage is averaging well under 10% usage with no obvious usage spikes

im currently going through all the settings of media player classic/klite but its a daunting task considering the massive heaps of options and my limited or nonexistant knowledge of them

not a bad idea, however there was an unrelated mishap recently that led to the HDMI cable being replaced anyway through which the issue persisted.

Do you have another PC monitor laying around that can use HDMI? Trying to rule out the HDMI output on your graphics card. Is there more than one HDMI input on the TV you can/have tried?

Personally I just use VLC. Changing the mode on the TV is generally done by input and gaming modes are usually set up to avoid the TV doing any processing of the signal. The most common symptom of problems with the TV processing is in input lag or judder issues and not random frame skipping.

If you are running your movie in a window and span the window between the displays does the frame skip happen on the TV without the problem happening on the side that is still on the monitor? The point of that test was to see if it's something external to your computer that is causing it.
