C'mon tech wizards, give me some advice :)

Daughter yanked the laptop onto the floor yesterday, now when I boot it, it posts, gets to the Windows 7 boot screen, shortly after which time it turns off. It's a kind off instant off (possibly an electrical short?)

I can get a Live Ubuntu to boot into its desktop, it's stable until I try to do anything with, ie Start->internet->Chrome then it goes 'pop' black screen power off again.

I've taken out all the hardware I can - HD, Wifi, moved the RAM into the 2nd slot, performed a RAM check.

Any suggestions? Any diagnostic tools you can think off?

It's a 4 yo compaq / 4Gb / Dual core AMD of some sort.

Thanks for looking

First i would check the laptop memory is seated correctly. I once had a desktop pc with a similar issue after testing most devices were OK the only thing left was motherboard. I believe it was a small hairline crack on one of the tracks or solder joints it was not worth it.I binned it.
I seen videos where they fix motherboards by using a hairdryer called re-flow they usually do it as a last resort
As everytime you try to use the chrome I would guess it could be more related to memory or gpu but could be anything.
You could try running a memory test with a restore disk or if you download on Hirens boot cd to test further mem checks,GPU, and other devices.
