Hello, my last laptop (Toshiba) died on me around last September (the charging input inside was no longer working so I couldn't get power to it from my charging cable) and I've been putting off getting a new laptop for a while now. I've been trying to figure out when is the best time to buy a laptop or when new models will be released. I don't want to purchase one and then next month newer models come out. I know something new is always going to get released regardless but I want to try and time it as well as possible. Here are some things I'm looking for:

1. Budget: Between $600-$800. Maybe a little more if it's worth it.

2. Size: Around 15 inches.

3. Resolution: Preferably 1080p but willing to sacrifice if I have to.

4. I travel (fly) about twice a month so I'd like something in the 15 inch range but willing to go larger.

5. Battery Life: I wan't something decent but most of the time the laptop will be plugged in.

6. Gaming: I wouldn't mind doing some basic gaming but I'm in no way looking for a gaming laptop. If i can find one with a decent dedicated GPU that'd be great but not necessary.

7. Most of my tasks will be using Google Chrome and transfering data between external hdd's (music/movies/etc). If i can do some decent gaming that'd be nice but that's more of luxury than necessity right now.

8. Storage: I don't care about storage. I'm most likely going to replace the stock HDD with a SSD anyway and then use an external HDD to access my movies/music/etc.

9. I'd like to keep the laptop for about 3-5 years.

10. Optical Drive: Having one would be nice but I can also connect an external drive. If I find a model with an optical drive I would probably Swap it out for a HDD and put a SSD in as well.

11. I'm open to about all brands except Toshiba. The last one I had had disappointing build quality and the charger input inside the computer went bad so I couldn't even charge it anymore.

12. I live in the USA

13. I'd like to have 3 USB 3.0 ports and HDMI

I'm currently eyeing this model here: http://www.microcenter.com/product/439001/N56JN-MH71_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Black_Aluminum but not sure if I should wait a few more months and see if newer models come out. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Broadwell U and Y class chips are out already. So the M class, like in that ASUS laptop, will be out soon. It is a process shrink, so should be a little better on battery life then Haswell chips.

No complaints about what you have selected. Very similar to what I bought about a year ago. i7-4700MQ, GT740M, 8GB of DDR3L, 1TB 5400rpm for about $880 from Lenovo (Y410p) (I also swapped in a 240GB SSD)

Honestly the best time to buy is right before the beginning of a new college semester, usually a lot of deals and specials going on. But really it is when you think you need one.

I can probably hold off on buying one for another 3 months, so say around June I'd like to get one. Do you think I should wait and see what comes out or just get one now?

No exact dates for Broadwell M that I can find. Most of the decent 5th Gen chips available now only came out in February.

Might see an odd time this year, since they will also release Skylake. So that will be the U and Y class chips again, while Broadwell M and D (Desktop) will only have been out for a few months (if that).
