Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire V5 573 running windows 8.1 and has up-to-date kaspersky antivirus. It was running ok last night, but today when I turned it on and logged in as usual and clicked on programs and files, nothing happened. I can't open task manager or do anything at all except click between my windows app screen and desktop screen. The off /restart buttons won't work, I have to use the power button to switch it off.
It's so weird cos it was fine yesterday and I haven't done anything unusual to it.
Any help much appreciated!

This can happen when coming out of sleep. Do you continue to have this issue after shutting it down with the power button and booting back into Windows? (If "yes," then you can attempt to boot into Safe Mode. Once there, try running Ccleaner ─ a free download if you don't already have it ─ and the command line: sfc /scannow (more info on that here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ht/sfc-scannow.htm).)

Hi Prostar - thanks for trying to help me with this.
Yes this problem keeps occuring even after shutting down with the power button and then re-starting.
Is there a way of booting in safe mode prior to the desktop screen loading? I am able to log in, but once the desktop is loaded, I can't open or click on any programs or do anything at all...

If you can get to the shut down button in Windows 8.1 (on your charms bar to the right), then hold down shift while you select "Restart." Once you've done that, the laptop will reboot with a cyan background and some options. It will look like this, and you can follow these screenshots and directions outlined in Option One here.

There are other ways of getting into Safe Mode, but they're very hit or miss; try Shift and F8 keys together as the computer is first starting (repeatedly tap them). You can also try going through the computer's built-in recovery feature, as there may be a way to launch the Windows start up options through that.

Thanks for the tip - that worked with holding down the shift key when clicking re-start. I tried doing a system restore - but got blocked in doing that by my anti-virus software. Then tried doing a system refresh - that worked although bit of a nuisance that ms office/outlook and some other programs got wiped off, but definitely better than having a laptop that can't do anything at all! So thanks for your help Pro-Star :), you really helped me fix it!

Great! And now you know how to enter advanced startup options and Safe Mode in Windows 8(.1). :) All the best to you, and hopefully you enjoy the laptop for the long haul.
