so my dad recently gave me our old living room hd tv cause he got a new one, and i decided to hook up my desktop to the tv with my vga cable cause, well i've done it before. everything seems to be working fine until i start up a game, then my screen goes black, however i can still here the game. i dont have my pc simultaneously connected to my desktop AND tv since i only have 1 vga cable. when i start skyrim im actually able to get it work by switching its resolution from 1600x1080 i think to 1300x786 or something like that. my question is, is the only fix to my situation is to get a gpu with an hdmi port (my current gpu is a gtx 650) and connect it to my, then the game will automatically set the correct resolution, or do i manually change the resolution of my games before i can play it on my tv.

well before i start a game i do set the settings for my display to match tv, i can go on chrome and stuff on my tv without a problem, however it goes black during games.only game ive been able to get working is skyrim, and only because u can set resolution before starting the game

Your games are probably trying to drive the TV at a different signal timings (resolution / refresh rate / pixel clock) than your desktop. A signal timing the TV does not support. So to protect itself, the TV is refusing to display the image and blanking the screen.

Ideally, there's a Windows driver for your TV. That'll tell Windows all the video modes it supports, and the games can just use that to pick a supported resolution. Otherwise you're stuck with trying every possible resolution and refresh rate one at a time.

It is possible to get this to work with VGA, since obviously the desktop works. But unless the games can somehow pick it up from Windows (maybe try deleting the config file and letting it reconfigure), it's going to be a long, arduous process.
