I am shopping for a new laptop or 2 in 1. I didn't know i7 processors comes in a dual core. What I notices was majority of the new 5 generation i7 were dual core and most 4th generation i7 were quad core. Whats the difference? I can not find a 2 in 1 with a i7 quad core. Which one is better?
Should i get the older ultrabooks with 4th gen i7 quad core or the newer 2 in 1's i7 dual core?
Thanks!

All desktop Core i7 CPUs are quad core CPUs. However, only certain mobile Core i7 CPUs are quad core CPUs while others are dual core CPUs. All "M" and "U" model Core i7 CPUs are dual core CPUs while MQ, HQ and MX versions are quad core CPUs.

To the best of my knowledge all 5th generation mobile Core i7 CPUs are dual core CPUs since the focus is on low power consumption for longer batter life. All ultrabooks only use dual core "u" model CPUs since that is one of the requirements for a laptop to be classified as an ultrabook.

If CPU performance is important then buy a laptop with a quad core i7 CPU. If CPU performance is not too important or if battery life is important then buy a laptop with a dual core i7 CPU.

A Gen5 i7 is a mobile product If you look at the intel ARK -- http://ark.intel.com/ you will not see 5th generation parts for desktop yet. There are 5th generation mobile parts -- they are dual core. 4th generation mobile parts had both quad and dual core. But in the same power envelope (15W) there is only dual core in 4th or 5th generation.
