i have an imedia desktop with 4gig already installed from shop i have installed windows 7 32bit home premium but it says only

my desktop keeps saying only 2.45gb of RAM is usable but there is 4gb RAM already preinstalled from factory, but i bought is has a barebones desktop & installed windows 7 home premium 32bit myself also been told i told i can use use a flash drive for extra memory is that correct but how do i get to use the full normal 4gb ?

That RAM amount is a bit low with nothing running but maybe because of shared video memory, and also reserved memory for other things.

You will never see a ful 4 gig usable.

Go to Task Manager, Performance and click on Resource Monitor. You will be able to see what processes are using RAM and how much.

Windows typically will only allow 3.5 gigs of ram on 32 bit OS then there's the couple megabytes reserved for video assuming you dont have a stand alone graphics card then windows 7 itself utilizes about 1 to 1.5 gigs just to run the basic OS with background services. so my guess is this about where it should be. Using a flash drive for extra memory really is joke because of how slow they are compared to RAM. your best bet is to upgrade to a 64 bit version of windows if the processor in the computer is capable of it. But anyways you more than likely will be stuck with 2.45 due to the 32 bit OS install, a 64 really would only gain you an excess .5 gigs so if i were you i would just work with it. Unless you actually use the computer for more than word processing and browsing the internet.

Your forgetting about the gig of ram required just to run windows 7. Plus video memory is typically 64, 128 or 256 megs but only if there is not a stand alone graphics card.

The RAM amount that is "usable" is outside of Windows, that would be "free" RAM not "usable" RAM. Free RAM is amount of RAM that is available to new programs after existing programs are taken into account, like Windows. Usable RAM is how much RAM software that starts up can have access to. If you have 4 gig physically installed, you should have close to that as Usable RAM, before Windows loads. After Windows loads what you have available would be Free RAM.
