For example:

I purchase The Razer Kraken Pro and use them with the Razer surround Pro software
OR
I purchase The Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma

Am I correct in assuming that the 7.1 from The Chroma headset would be better?

cant say which is better, but i can say there is no such thing as an "actual 7.1 surround sound" headset. it is all done with software, regardless. whether a program running on your pc, or audio processing done by the headphones themselves... it is all stereo sound.

I realize that they are both virtual. I guess I worded it poorly. just wondering whether there would be a difference between a stereo headset with external software or having a 7.1 headset with the software built into the headset itself.

If your sound card is good enough, then you won't notice any difference between using a Virtual 7.1 enabled headset and using the Razer Surround Sound program.

I tried comparing the Razer Megalodon (which comes with the Maelstrom 7.1 engine on the hardware) with the Razer Carcharias+Razer Surround and it was no discernible difference.
