I used to say Lenovo every time, but they have a huge issue with malware going on right now. Go for the Dell. Just be aware that it's lack of SSD means it's going to be much slower.

Both have one same processor but the first has 500GB HDD and IPS display but the second 128GB ssd. Since I prefer more storage , I would get the Dell . Obviously , the majority of the people prefer the opposite.

Thanks Brillis. So you're saying I shouldn't purchase the Lenovo because of the malware... would removing the program get rid of the malware? (sorry if thats a dumb question) Also, would the Dell be slower in general or just during boot and load times? I heard the hybrid HD that the Dell has is pretty quick!

Also, I currently have a Macbook Pro with 750 GB of storage... Only 200 is being used and that's with all the programs I see myself needing. The SD card slot would allow me to expand that memory if really needed, right?

There are ways to remove it, yeah, it's just more of an ethics thing. I can't believe that a company would do something like that. If you were to buy it, I'd recommend a fresh install anyway.

It's not a dumb question.

The Dell would just be slower in boot and loading times, mostly, but it affects the overall system in a small way.

Rockie brought up a good point though. If you're a student, you're going to need space. After the OS, you'll only have about 80GB free. All signs point towards the Dell.

SD cards aren't meant for program storage. While it would work, I wouldn't buy it relying on that possibility.

Hmmm... Okay so out of those 2 it does look like the Dell is the winner.

I did find an upgraded version of the Lenovo on their website on sale: http/shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/yoga-laptop-series/yoga-laptop-2-pro/?sb=:000001C9:00014111: Is that worth the extra $100? Will I notice a significant increase in performance for everyday computing?

That has a 256GB SSD, which is manageable, but if you're looking for battery life, it's going to be awful. It has a 4-cell battery, and a crazy high resolution (3200x1800), so that battery is going to plummet when you're using it.

I have a laptop with 500GB hdd and I am pleased . It doesn't affect gaming , so I am pleased . But yes, 256GB will suffice.

Would getting the same Dell model with a higher screen resolution (http/www.amazon.com/Dell-Notebook-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor/dp/B00NJNEE3O/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1424465545&sr=1-3&keywords=dell+inspiron+13+7000) be a better purchase? Is the screen resolution on the model I posted in the original post significantly crappier than this one?

A laptop 5400rpm HDD is agonizingly slow. Replacing it with an SSD of your choosing is incredibly simple, and makes your computing 'fly'

There are 2 screws on the bottom of the Dell which open a panel to expose the laptop HDD. You simply replace the original laptop HDD with the 'cloned' SSD, and place the 1TB in the external enclosure (that you may use for storage and back-up).

It takes 25 minutes or so to clone the entire laptop system onto the SSD using the Samsung software, and to swap-out the drives. There is even a small screw driver that comes with the Vantec enclosure.

The Dell service manual has step-by-step instructions on the HDD removal, or you may simply watch a YouTube video

Here is a Lenovo Z50 Notebook AMD A-Series A10-7300 for $490 -- and a video on the HDD removal (3 screws ... Oh, my goodness!)

You add substantial value and greatly improve your computing experience. Win8 will boot in 7 or 8 seconds.

Samsung SSDs come with a simple, free 'cloning' tool (it's called the 'Data Migration Tool'). Use the USB dongle from the external enclosure to attach the SSD to the laptop, launch the software, and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Power-down after cloning and replace the laptop HDD with its clone. Put the original laptop HDD in the external enclosure. You're done.
