Can I install a 64 bit WIN 7 on a desktop that is currently running a version of WIN 7 32 bit as a dual-boot setup? I would love to max it out with 16 GB ram in anticipation of WIN 10, when available ...

Yes you can, simply make a new partition on your HDD so you can use to install on it your Win 7 64bits version, make sure to have its respective drivers in hand (chipset, audio, video, LAN/Wireless) and to give it at the very least 40GB of space since the 64bit OS alone will eat around 20GB, from there you need to see how much extra space will be needed depending on which other programs you're going to install.

I guess I can answer that, I run Win 7 64bits Ultimate and Windows XP 32bits in my system, main reason being compatibility with older games, although Win 7 64bits has it's compatibility options and "Windows XP mode" neither gets to run these old games the way XP does it, also there's still many software out there that works better in a 32bit environment, banking systems and such, assuming the user works with software of that type ofc.
