Can I use my laptop as "speakers" to play sound for my Playstation 3?

I haven't bought these items yet, but I will very soon so I wish to get the best advice.

I'm intending on using a computer monitor to display my games. I have the visual part in check already, using a HDMI male to DVI male cable, that s fine and dandy.

Sound however, may be a hassle...or at least a bit more confusing. My issue is, in the event assuming I am unable to find a monitor with built in speakers and within my budget, can my laptop be an alternative? What I mean by this, is I have regular external desktop speakers hooked up to my laptop via the 3.5mm audio jack. Instead of having the speakers connected, can I connect the rca cables (Red, White, Yellow) that already come with the PS3 using a 3.5mm Male to Dual RCA Female Y Splitter Audio Stereo Adapter Cable directly to the audio jack of my laptop and use it's own built in speakers to provide sound for my PS3?

I am aware of the various other alternatives and cables/ adapters available to provide sound, but I am strictly asking if my proposal can take care of the audio issue.

you should be able to use the mic input with the 3.5 mm adapter to get the sound to play through. it may not sound very good but it should let the signal through. i have done this with an ipod before for the same reason. used the audio cable from ipod to mic input and it played no problem. there was a bit of quality loss but it played through the speakers.

if you don't have the mic input then it won't work. the headphone jack is only an output and won't know what to do with the signal from the jack if it is an input.
