Sorry didn't know what category this goes under. I'm currently comparing 2 different laptops. One has Intel i7, 4gb ram and 2GB AMD RadeonTM R7 M260 while the other has Intel 5, 8gb and the same video card. They're the same price and brand, Toshiba. Should I get the one with newer processor and 4gb or older processor but 8gb ram? It's mainly for school work but I will game on the side, nothing too modern and demanding eg GTA IV.

Solution

Take the i5 for sure. The 4b ram is too low to do gaming. The i5 and i7 perform about the same in games.

Great thanks for the quick response. Also what do you think about the gpu in terms of what games it can play? I know it's nothing special but it'd be good to know it's capabilities.

I honestly don't know much about laptop gpu's. You are gonna have to look up some benchmarks. I've mainly only worked with Nvidia cards.

hello there i would recommend the core I7 most current 3rd and 4th gen I7 are quad core and most core I5 is dual core and just remember this you can always upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb but you cant upgrade the core I5 to an I7 so my vote is for the core I7 might as well get the best you can get now so you dont regret later hope this helps
