The speaks in question just have one knob, "tone". How does this function? is the "base" part of it the center, minimum, or maximum? If I want my audio to sound as close as possible to the source audio, how should I set it?

Solution
Zero - which is in the middle mean your tone signal is neutral. min and max means your tone enhancement is either minus (min) or plus at (maximum)

Try turning it and your sound will enhance or decrease.
