This question has been on my mind for a while...

We recently upgrade our TV set-up and the long and the short of it is, i have a Yamaha Rx-V377 AC receiver that I am not using.
I am curious as to inquire, 'Can I connect the AC Receiver to my laptop and run music through it and if there would be an improvement to the sound quality?' I am running an Asus X53E laptop. Also if you could be as generous as to tell me what cables I might need to optimize the sound quality if this would work.

I appreciate you taking time to attempt to solve my quandary. Thanks in advance.

That`s a nice receiver, anyway the problem is what your laptop is capable of on the audio side of it.

In most cases you left with about two options.
The first is to use a 1.5 mm jack, cable with audio phono connectors on the opposite end of the cable for left and right audio and plug into the back of the Yamaha receiver.

And your second is to use a Hdmi cable from the laptop to one of the Hdmi ports also on the back of the Yamaha receiver
As Hdmi cables can carry sound and visual. But it will again depend on your laptop.
You will need to check on your laptop if in the audio devices section if Hdmi is listed as a audio output source.
Then it would work.
The problem is can the audio chip inside the laptop send 2.1 or 5.1 audio or...

The feature will most likely be via the Hdmi port on the laptop. vs the 2.1 sound you will get via the 1.5mm jack cable to two phono`s for left and right audio.

I would use an HDMI if your laptop has hdmi out put. That way you get your 5.1 surround sound. Or as the guy above suggested. I recently got the yamaha rx-a840 and I can send the sound wireless though the receivers wifi.
