First off let me say thank you to anyone willing to help me out with this, I really appreciate it.

So iv been doing some research and Im struggling to not buy a MacBook (leaning towards pro). I do well with electronics in general though so Im not scared of any fix's id have to do myself (short of the costs these fix's would cost me) and I dont need a super user friendly machine that would baby me. Some information about what im looking for:

Budget: 800-1500

Size: 15 (ideal) but anything larger wouldn't be a problem

Screen resolution: flexible.

Battery Life: So I feel like I would always be around a plug but Most people I speak to suggest 5+ hours of battery life just incase.

Gaming: Yes. Forsure. Specifically Starcraft 2, Civ: After Earth and Anno 2070. The higher the settings the better but I just want the machine to run cool and not overheat on me while I play these games.

Other tasks: School (university student) and the odd night with netflicks would also be nice but not quite necessary.

Storage space: Doesn't matter at all. I like external HDD's and have many. I would like to have a SSD in the machine for speed purposes though. (I dont mind adding this individually later myself)

Buying Location: I would prefer offline at a store, but im not opposed to any site that is reputable.

Longevity of the laptop: ~2-3 Years.

Optical drive: Not necessary at all. If its there, Bonus.

Brands: Apple seems to be a Solid choice because of the durability of their products. From what iv gathered its head and shoulders above every other company. Although for non Mac machines HP and Samsung are apparently best. I generally have always been a fan of Windows products and I dont really want to switch to mac, but for the price the MacBook Pro seems to be beyond any windows powered machine....

Location: I live in Canada :) Toronto. If the price is right I dont mind going to New York or Buffalo though.

The Information above should give a decent understanding on what im looking for, but back to the main question. Is there any Windows Machine out there that can keep up with the Macbook Pro ?

Thank you again for any help, I really appreciate it!!

-Mike.

This is hard as you want 5+ hours of battery life but also want to game. Thin laptops can beat this time but most aren't made for gaming and the ones that are will be very hot and loud when gaming. I would go with a windows machine over a mac if gaming is a must as most games are made for windows. Lenovo are generally on par with macs for durability. You could try asus but they are very pricy but have very good cooling. I would stay away from hp for gaming as they are not good but I don't know much about the hp omen though. Dell is another alternative but they are more focused on business than gaming (except for the alienware range).

For that kind of money you could get a gaming laptop (obviously Windows), with more power than it's Apple equivalent. If you are capable of occasionally doing some very basic troubleshooting, there is really no point in choosing the Mac, unless you absolutely love it's interface and don't mind paying more for less.

This one is more than enough for your needs and under your budget: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152689

This is a cheaper, more modest one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834257790

I'll give it a try.

Budget: Seems a little low for Mac

Battery Life: 5 hours is good

Gaming: Windows is probably a better choice for gaming

Other: Check with your school as to what they use (and support). If you need Mac, you'll need a Mac machine, if Windows, you can run both on a Mac

Buying location: any big box or office store should have many laptops to try. Manufacturer websites are a good place to check. I've been a Sony fan, but they quit making PC's. I'm probably looking at Lenovo for my next laptop.

Brands: Apple is good, but pricey. A Windows machine with Intel will perform right alongside a Mac. Lenovo or Dell would get my vote for top honors. You won't want to scrimp, if performance is a factor. You can buy a cheap Windows machine, but $1000 - $1500 is probably where you'll be at for a long-lived machine. Checking on factory refurbished might be a decent alternative.

Windows and Mac are going to perform equally well. They're both running Intel processors. There are specific tasks that one, or the other, might be better suited for, but they're pretty much on par. If you need Mac OS, then it's a Mac, but if you need Windows, but like Mac, you can dual boot, which allows you to run either.

One thing, regarding purchase location is that if you need warranty service, it's nice to have the place of purchase nearby, so you don't have to ship your laptop off to somewhere.
