I just purchased another laptop and the previous owner states. The laptop was working great for a long time. Then out of no where it began to slow down after about an hour and eventually would freeze. He stopped using it because of this and put it in his closet. He then decided to sell it and I picked it up. It is running Windows 7.

Upon receiving it, It works fine. Seems to take awhile to boot up but doesn't seem abnormal. Progresses at a steady rate. Battery seems weak and doesn't seem to hold its charge for more than 1 hour max, maybe only 40-45 minutes. Also when turning it on I from a fresh start at the dashboard I notice when you expand the shut down menu from the start menu the remaining choice's are blank (such as log off, sleep, reboot, etc). Also when right clicking logos at the bottom right of the task bar they are blank as well, for example right clicking the battery icon, wireless icon, etc.

So basically my questions is,

What would make a computer (or laptop) slow down after running for some time, and eventually freeze? CPU? faulty battery/power supply or rather a power issue? RAM issue? GPU potentially?

Just looking for some general ideas so I can understand how stuff works better. If you guys have any tests I should or could run, im definitely all ears!

First step im going to attempt to verify the problem completely. And figure out what exactly its doing.

I good tip. I haven't even thought about doing that. I'm not positive if its a re-installation or not. Theres not really any trace of previous use everything is pretty blank. The previous owner may have wiped his stuff though. Or just used it for gaming, which I wouldn't doubt.

Do you have any programs you suggest? I've heard good things about AVG from a PC technician, I currently have a free version of ZoneAlarm on my desktop. Let me know ill throw something on the laptop with a usb stick and see what happens.
