Dumb question but

When I plug in my speakers it tells me center, left, back etc. I have it set up with one to each side of my monitor so I thought I would left and right but it didn't work. Only when I set both to front did I actually hear sound. Is there anyway to actually make it be left and right?

Also if I set the volume low enough it switches to the monitor volume. Any idea reason why it does it and I how can I fix it?

Do you have your monitor connected via HDMI?

It does not switch to the monitor at low volume, it likely is always on but low and you can hear it when you turn down the other speakers. Your sound is probably setup for 7.1, which has center, front left/right, then side left/right and back left/right. Set the audio options to stereo. What you are setting when you select left and right is the side speakers not the front ones. You can't hear anything out of them because there is no side sound info going to them so of course they don't play anything.
