Is an i5, 8GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD overkill for school laptop?

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for school. I won't be doing any gaming on it. All I really need it to do is to be able to run Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Reader, and other simple programs like that efficiently. In addition to school I'll also use it for watching TV/movies and browsing the Internet.

Obviously I want this to be an efficient laptop that will last be awhile. So first of all as the thread title asks, in your opinion is an i5, 8GB RAM, and an SSD overkill for my purposes? Also, am I correct in saying that for my purposes a graphics card would be completely pointless?

Alright cool. Do you guys have any specific recommendations on a laptop that would fit my needs? I hear good things about Lenovo but I'm not sure on the specific models.

If you're really only planning on using it for school purposes I'd recommend a tablet (either Android or Windows 8.1) with a cover/case and an external bluetooth keyboard. It should cost half the price, the battery will last 2-3 times longer (from class to class if plug outlets aren't nearby,) and will run silently. You'd also be able to type from your lap and leave the tablet on the desk for more desk space and better posture.

...@MooneyBA1, are you trying to get this kid to waste his money? All of those laptops are an absolute WASTE of money.

For $1,000 you can get a Sager with a 15.6" 1080p monitor, 8GB RAM, i7-4710hq CPU, a GTX 850m GPU, extra copper cooling, and IC Diamond thermal compound. Why spend $1,000 on an i5 with integrated graphics?

Also, if you buy any laptop with an mSATA port you could just spend $105 on a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB mSATA SSD.

@bigbobby1, did you already make your purchase? And if so can you post a link of what you bought? :D

@MooneyBA1, ...lol. 10/10.
The reason why I recommended the laptop with the i7 and dedicated GPU was because it was just a hundredish dollars over the price limit, but he'd get near-mid-tier desktop performance (GPU on-par with GTX 650/660, etc.)
