can I buy a dvd/vhs player with only hdmI and use hdtv with only av connection

There have never been any VHS-VCRs with HDMI output. The closest thing was D-VHS which is no longer made. If you need to connect it to a TV with HDMI inputs only you can get an adapter (not just a cable) to do this. If you want to record what you are viewing on the TV you cannot since there are no video outputs on HDTVs. If you have external sources with composite video outputs you can record from those.
