Buy Used Or Wait For New?

Hi I am preparing to purchase a used mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro. It has the general specs, 250 GB HDD, 4 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and I'm purchasing it for $500. If I upgrade the HDD to a 256 SSD and put in 16 GB of RAM, will the older processor bottleneck me too much to do web development, programming, Xcode, and minor graphic design for a few website projects I am working on?

Or on the flipside, should I save up a few dollars and instead get a new mid-2014 rMBP that isn't quite as upgradable with a better processor?

This will not be a graphic intensive used MacBook, mostly work and coding.

TL;DR - Upgrade mid-2010 MacBook Pro or save and buy new mid-2014 rMBP?

Unfortunately, the need of using Xcode is necessary. I have thought about virtualizing OS X but it's discouraged in the Apple ToS. But don't think I haven't thought about going down that road :)
