I brought this laptop second hand at the end of August and at the start of December it said that the laptop is plugged in but not charging, when I plug the laptop in it charges for about 10 seconds before it stops, the battery is on 43%. Also the laptop doesn't start up properly. The power light comes on but the satellite light doesn't and then the fan stops spinning. I took out the battery and held the power button down before plugging it back in and then turning it on which worked a couple of times (it said BIOS was shadowed but I don't know what that means) and now I can't get it to turn on anymore. Please help!!

It could be the power brick (adapter) is bad. If you have a way of testing the power source then test the voltage to make sure it is supplying enough power. If it isn't then you may need to replace it. If it is then may be related to the motherboard. I have an older Toshiba laptop and had a similar problem and it turned out to be the power adapter.
