Headphone socket problem

Hi, im getting audio mostly from one side.
I've read a couple of threads, but i believe i have another unique part to it.
While plugged in the volumes are about 100% one side, 10% the other. However if i unplug the socket about half way, it changes to 0% one side, 100% the other. Though then auto detection switches back to main speakers after half a second. So it seems the speakers and cables are fine.
It goes one set further if i disable auto plugging detection. With the plug just reset on the socket i get mono sound through both headphone speakers.

Does this mean the socket itself is faulty, a setting not set up right, or a motherboard problem?
Thanks

Ok, thanks. I will have a rumage round the bios shortly.
Im not sure if the case is AC or HD. I recall being a little confused when i built it, as it has both cables. I roughly remember going with AC'97.
I have a bitfenix shinobi, its always had an intermittent connection though :(

It says HD Audio1 on the motherboard and it was the HD cable i had previous used.
Interestingly reseating the connector seems to have done the trick. Not only that, it has also solved the intermittent socket problem, which id come to accept as a manufacturing defect.

Thanks for getting me tugging at wires lol.
