Laptop booting up and almost shutting off soon after

My laptop, which is a few years old and has seen a ton of use, just started with a new problem: some time after powering up, it shuts off (almost as if the battery died). Sometimes it's just a few seconds after booting it up, sometimes it successfully boots up and I have several minutes, during which I can use it normally, before it shuts off.

The battery is mostly shot and holds maybe five minutes of charge, but isn't the problem: I took it out, booted the laptop up, and the same thing happened.

The only other problem I've had with it is an occasional display issue where withers there are flickering thin black lines or the left third of the screen transposes itself over to the right. I have always just restarted the laptop to fix those issues, and they don't happen too often.

The laptop is an Asus EEE, though I don't remember the technical specs offhand.

Any ideas?

Its better you show your laptop to service centre near to you. If it was a desktop you can handle anyway by replacing parts. As its old one, get a new one instead.

Well, I would really like to nurse it along for another month or two if possible. I'm trying to figure out what the problem is, and can't find much information online. I'm not sure what it could be that makes it shut off after a few minutes working fine - a certain part overheating maybe?
