My Recommend: Lenovo IdeaPad Y50 Gaming Laptop
In some ways, the Lenovo Y50 does not look all the much different from past Y510 but there are a number of changes. The keyboard deck and lid for the display look very similar but the profile is different. The system is now just .9-inches thick which is a good deal thinner. In addition to the thinner profile, the weight of the system has also dropped to just five and a third pounds. Of course some of this reduction also comes at the loss of a DVD burner that the past model came equipped with. Overall, it offers a fairly solid level of construction.
Screen:
Lenovo Y50 comes with an outstanding display of 1920×1080 native resolution and an ideal brightness level. With its idyllic brightness, Y50 is however liable to shimmer in perky sunlight and certain conditions from the lustrous coating of the surface. Y50’s most dodgy dilemma is the presence of slight narrow vertical viewing angles that cause the contrast to shift and this poses a problem if you try to combat the glare by viewing from certain angles.
CPU:
Lenovo’s Y50, like most laptops aiming at superb performance comes with an Intel Core i7-4700HQ quad core mobile processor. This high spec enables Y50 to seamlessly perform just any assignment as well as an outstanding Pc gaming and digital video editing experience. This is a bit slower than other models that use the i7-4710HQ but the trifling 100MHZ difference between them is unnoticed by many. Smooth experience is guaranteed for Y50 users as the processor is harmonized by an inbuilt 8GB of DDR3 memory ensuring an overall smooth Windows experience. One hurdle with the system however is the exertion in upgrading as the memory is inbuilt and not easily accessed by the user.
GPU:
Though graphics on all models are handled by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M graphics, the non-Ultra HD versions have slight changes as it possess a 2GB of memory rather than the regular 4GB in others. This allows it to play many games at over 30fps at the 1920×1080 resolution of the panel. However, some highly demanding games like Metro: Last Light, Sleeping Dogs, and the recently released Thief may require some tweaking of the settings for a suave gameplay. Nevertheless, it is one of the cheapest 15.6 inch notebooks with a GTX 860M GPU presently in the market.
Keyboard:
Lenovo has always ranked high when it comes to keyboards and the Y50 is not any different. Its isolated layout with a numeric keypad comes with a red keyboard backlight for active usage even in the dark. Its has a large trackpad of high sensitivity to motion across it while limiting typos resulting from slight brushes on the trackpad. This is quite handy since the trackpad and keyboard are almost of the same level.
Battery:
Lenovo Y50 comes with a four cell internal model battery pack with a 54Whr capacity rating which they claim to last for up to five hours. From my personal video playback experiment, I was redirected to the standby mode after only four hours. This is not quite a big deal for a laptop so promising, However an improvement from the previous Y510/Y410 models.
Verdict
Considering all its outstanding features, enabling you to play most games efficiently, in a fine-looking and portable 5.4-pound chasis, the Lenovo Y50 is quite deserving of its 1000 dollars price tag.
