So how do you connect a DVD player with component connectors to a hdmi tv?

Ah, the old days of component. I am sure you can get some sort of adapter. Try Parts Express, they sell tons of stuff like that.
Component is an analog signal, hdmi is a digital signal and typical need digital rights management. Don't wast money for an adapter that will not work or give you bad quality. Spend the money for a cheer new DVD player with hdmi out instead.

I agree, you might as well buy a new one. An adapter may end up costing just as much and won't work as well.
