I have just set up a Logitech z506 5.1 surround sound system and plugged everything into my PC running Windows 8 (trust me I got all of the connections right). I am just using the built in Realtek audio in my Asus P8 z77 mobo and when I test the sound in the Realtek audio manager everything works fine and the surround works fine in SOME games. In a lot of games, youtube, and even DVDs using VLC, I only get audio from the 2 front speakers and the subwoofer.

Solution
mark FILL SPEAKERS on your realtek. Then some sounds will transfer to your back speakers. Most games have 5.1 sound ( i am from 10 years with 5.1 and still no problem. ) Check the settings in Realtek (5.1 must be selected) and In game settings for the sound.
If you want full speakers with 5.1 get Klite (codecs). From MediaPlayerClasic you can ajust the sound and fill all the speakers you got (they will sound at once!) http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

i looked at your speakers with line level input hooking up the green jack on motherboard. set the realtek to 2 speaker 2.0. save settings. if you tell manager you have more speakers, you will use 2 more jacks on your moth board. if they engage. u will lose speakers. good luck
