Just wondering if the battery creating heat affects the cooling performance of a laptop. Does taking it out keep your laptop cooler?

The heat generated by the battery is minimal. It does get warm to the touch but nothing to be worried over. It's warmest is when it's being charged. Unless the battery is seriously overheating, that's the time it should be replaced.

On my laptop I would take the battery out when it hit 100%. That way I could prolong the life of the battery since I mainly used the laptop on A/C power and only used the battery when I was at school.
