I have my PC hooked up to my TV with a 20 foot HDMI cable strung under a large rug. I'm on Windows 7 and went into Sound > Playback.

I have 4 options:

AMD HDMI Output
Speakers
Digital Audio (S/PDIF)
Digital Audio (HDMI)

The AMD HDMI Output says "Not plugged in", and the other Digital Audio (HDMI) device says "Ready".

I have selected both, and still haven't got sound out of the TV speakers. I used this connection because I want to watch Netflix on my TV with sound coming out of those speakers, not the PC.

Is this possible?

Solution
TV is connected by optical SPDIF to 5.1 surround sound setup. Check your tv settings for audio source in and out. It should be doable.

My complete setup goes like this...

20 foot HDMI cable acts as a 3rd monitor (all extended displays) connecting PC to 42 inch HDTV.

1) Isn't the HDMI cable capable of carrying the audio signals from the PC to the TV?

TV is connected by optical SPDIF to 5.1 surround sound setup.

2) A step further, would it be possible to play something from my PC to TV, but getting sound out of SS speakers. Or is the hardware not there to support that?

All problems solved.

PC now playing sound through SS with a connection I didn't know what possible:

PC to TV via 20 foot HDMI cable, TV to SS via optical SPDIF. All I did was go into my sound settings and change the TV speakers to default device. Then I set the SS receiver to digital-IN (TV).
