Need help transfering OS from HDD to SDD (Win7 Gateway NV79 with dual HD slots)

So I decided to upgrade the ram from 4GB to 8GB and wanted to also add a second SSD to speed up the OS. I am working on a Gateway NV7915U laptop and am stuck trying to get my SSD up and working.

I ended up buying a used but tested/wiped Intel 120GB 510 series SSD for 50 bucks shipped. I currently have a 500GB HDD that came with the computer.

I physically installed the new SDD in the second hard drive spot, booted computer up and followed some instructions from a youtube video and was able to create a new volume under the new SSD, formatted the SSD etc. and it shows up now under my computer. I verified it was indeed working by saving a few files/programs to the SSD.

So next I wanted to just transfer the OS system only. I did a bunch of searches on Google as well as on this forum and found a few helpful posts but nothing that fits what I am trying to do. Most have only one hard drive slot so they are using an external HD and backing up stuff which is not what I was after. I downloaded Intel Data Migration Software and was going to try to just clone part of my HD (if that's even possible) but I couldn't even get passed choosing the "destination" drive. Both drives are shown and I am able to choose the "Source" drive which is the original 500GB HDD, it thinks for a bit and moves onto the "destination" drive but both drives are greyed out. What I mean by that is neither is selectable. They are shown there but greyed out. I expected the original HD would be greyed out because it was just chosen for the "source" but why is it greying out the SSD? I did searches on this and found others with the same problem and found all sorts of suggestions. Like this SSD calculator and it showed everything is correct as shown here in a screen shot so that's not the issue. Someone that had the same issue concluded that his SSD may have been reallocated too much whatever that means. So I really don't know what the deal is.

Even if I get the IDMS to work, I don't know if it will even do what I need. I cant clone everything because my 500GB drive has way more then 120GB on it. I don't have a win 7 backup disc to install win 7 on the SSD manually. If I did I would just install it on the SSD and after It was working I would delete it from my HDD. Then I have the reg key for win 7 to deal with. From what I read, its tied to the actual mother board and not the hard drive which I guess is a good thing.

So what am I doing wrong here? I just want to get the most out of this SSD without starting over and loosing all my files, music, downloads, pictures etc.

Another question that I couldn't find an exact answer to is after I get the OS squared away, do I have to re-download any programs that I have now that are running off the HDD? Or can I simply just drag&drop the program from the HDD to the SSD? Some say yes, some say no, some say its complicated with changing the registry. I wish they made a clone program that allowed the user to choose only the files they want to be cloned which would make life much easier for people doing what I am doing right now. There is a "manual" mode on the IDMS program but I haven't gotten far enough to see if it let me. Most of the threads/posts I read were back in 2012 and from what people were saying, that program only cloned the entire drive. No other options. But that may be false info as well. Its hard to know who is talking out of their ass and who actually knows what they are talking about.

I apologize for the long post, but I wanted to try and cover all bases so I didn't have questions "did you do this yet" or "did you try that" type of thing. Im sure I didn't cover everything, just what I thought was relevant.

As you can tell I am not computer savvy, like they say I know enough to get myself in trouble. I am a fast learner and can follow any instructions. I just need some guidance here. Any help or suggestions are welcome. Im willing to try just about anything at this point. LOL

Thanks for your time

Jeremy

You need to also download all the drivers for your laptop from GATEWAY SUPPORT, install them, and then download apps like Firefox and configure everything to the way you want it to look.

You can import some of your settings, like stuff for Firefox, just look at the Mozilla site how to blogs for where to find everything and move it to the new install.

Wow, what a wall of text.

From a quick skim, no you cannot just drag and drop. You need to either do a clean install or you can try a clone of the old OS onto the SSD with a nice free program like EaseUS Todo Backup. The likely problem that you will have is that you need to get the OS drive size down to where it will fit on the SSD by deleting excess stuff. You can't just move the OS and leave the programs, they will need to be reinstalled to the HDD once the SSD is the OS drive so that they have the proper links.

If you decide to do a clean install (the best long term idea) and do not have an installer disk, here is what you need to do. Download an English Windows 7 disk image from the authorized online distributor (at no cost) from HERE and burn it to a DVD or make a USB installer stick using THIS TOOL and instructions.

Just be sure to download the same version that your authentication key is for -- usually you can find that on the Windows 7 sticker on your machine.

And if you do a clean install, do it with only the SSD attached and not the HDD until after the SSD OS install is done. Also, if it is available in your bios, change to AHCI SATA mode just before the clean install.

I'll admit I got a little glassy-eyed and didn't absorbed everything in your long post. But have you tried cloning the HDD to the SSD? I did it eith my laptop. Made an exact clone of the HDD with this: http://www.easeus.com/backup-software/tb-free.html?ref=dc_channel
You can follow this guide to make the clone: http://www.howtogeek.com/97242/how-to-migrate-windows-7-to-a-solid-state-drive/
I didn't have 2 drive slots in my laptop, so I had to put the drives in my desktop to do the job.

Thanks for the reply, I think a clean in stall is what I will have to do. I don't see any way around it if there are no programs that will let you choose only what needs to be sent over. Ill download win 7 and try to do what you said. Again I apologized for the long text. Just trying to give all info I can and save everyone time from having to ask questions and me responding.

Again sorry guys that the post was long. I know sorry doesnt help. LOL

So I cant clone the HDD to SDD because my SDD is smaller then the HDD. Otherwise it would be a piece of cake. But thanks for the reply

Is there any way you can reduce the space on the HDD to fit the SSD? Surely there must be stuff you can uninstall and/or move to other storage media if you are considering the alternative of doing a clean install as a last resort anyway.

So for 2 hours now I have been downloading the win 7 file from that site mentioned above and it says I have 5day left to download. LOL Its only downloaded 32mb out of the 3gb. I have a real slow high speed internet. I am at the limit for distance wise to a hub at the street. House is kind of rural. So I was only able to get around 1mbs and sometimes it drops way lower then that. And for some reason when I look under the downloads bar it shows only downloading 5-10kbs which makes no sense. Speedtest.com shows I have a download of slightly over 1mbs. So I don't know why its not downloading at that speed.

So is there any other options here? No way to make a disc of the win 7 that's on my computer right now I assume? I just don't think downloading is the way to go for someone in my situation. Any suggestions?

Oh and to "clutchc" I looked into reducing the space but I would need to delete around 100gb I started looking a programs and stuff but have no clue what i have that is taking up so much space. How much space does an OS take normally? Like say the day I brought the computer home when it was new?

It sounds like you need a faster Internet connection. :) No, you cannot create a Win 7 disk until you download that image, perhaps you have a library or friend with a faster connection to get the image to make the install DVD.

Do not try a partial clone. You would have to delete a bunch of programs and delete your hibernation files, restore points, and perhaps even your paging file to fit your OS easily. Then you would have to reinstall. All in all a clean install is your best option.

What I was referring to wasn't a partial clone. I meant to uninstall as many pgms as possible and delete as much personal data as possible to pare down the HDD space to fit the SSD. But yes, a clean install of Win would be best.

OP
You can use this little pgm to get a quick idea of what takes up how much space on your HDD: http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Or... You may find that returning the SSD for a larger size will be more convenient for you than the clean install or all the extra work.

Ok, so I left the download go and the internet speed must of picked up last night and it downloaded the win7. So I burned it to a dvr, shut down comp, took out hdd, in boot menu made sure sata was set to AHCI. Then chose the dvd drive to boot first. It did its thing and installed win 7. I entered the reg key that was on sticker on bottom of laptop.

So all that seemed to go ok. But everything looks way different. Im not able to choose the laptop screen for the display, the Ethernet drivers cant be found, as well as a few other drivers. I tried using the option to look on internet. And yes I set up the wireless connection before I did all this. Is there a way to tell the computer to look for the missing drivers? How do I know which drivers I need?

Also, Is there some way I can move all my settings like in windows, fierfox etc?
