I've been looking into getting a Bose companion 5 for my desktop, but the overall negativity towards Bose and the speakers are keeping me from committing to the companion 5. I'm looking to spend between £200-300 (or $300 to $500). I like Bose products and the trial in the shop sold me on them, but reading about the substandard sound quality for the price made me wonder what else was out there for the same price.

Any suggestions?

do you really need that 5.1 sound?
and do you have a decent sound card/dac to match your speakers?

i'd say go for krk rokit 8 - they should be around $200-300 and put the rest into a decent sound card/if you haven't got any/.
if you really need 5.1... well... the best way is to get a decent receiver and buy your own matching speakers...

I will look into receivers and separate speakers then. For the Bose, a sound card is not needed as it uses a USB conection :)

"Audiophiles" claim that Bose are overrated and overpriced. Some reviews, especially on Cnet point out that systems are available for less with much the same performance. I like the subwoofer though.
I will look through the suggestions you mentioned.
