Xbox 360 Headset with PC for recording?

Hi,

Temporarily, I am planning on using my Xbox 360 headset to record stuff for a video. However, this stuff needs to be on my PC for editing. If i plug in the headset to the PC via the wired Xbox 360 controller (which I already have), would I be able to get (free) recording software which could use the mic on the headset?

My friend does this on skype should work, fairly straight forward.

OK, but would the recording software recognize the headset automatically or are there drivers that i have to install

Windows should recognize it and in your sound devices you can change primary sound/mic and it will be identified.

I can't find it. I go to control panel, hardware and sound, manage audio devices and it's not there under any name that I can see. (I'm on windows 8.1 if that helps)
