My motherboard has an Optical Audio out so i thought if i plug the Optical Audio cable to my PC and than to my Surround sound Blue/DVD player that it would work but only the left and right speakers work out of the 5 and 1 subwoofer. I use my PS3 with my Samsung 5.1 and it works perfectly all 5 speakers and subwoofer woork liek a dream but i cant get my PC to work with it :(

Optical can do surround, but it's compressed. Spdif was originally for 2 channel only. Later when they decided to let 5.1 run through it, they kept the hardware specs the same so they needed to compress the channels in order to fit it into the limited bandwidth.

The PC can to surround, but you need to send it as DD or DTS (not PCM), so if it does send it like that, good, otherwise you need to have a DD Live capable system to encode the sound on the fly. I believe you can do DTS also, but that isn't as common.

HDMI is the only way to transmit lossless surround.

But Optical is "ONLY" for surround sound that is why it was made. Optical is for the best possible audio experience in existence.

Completely wrong.

There you have it. All versions of HDMI have native support for fully uncompressed 7.1 audio. HDMI 2.0 can do even more. They were literally made with surround sound in mind.

Buy a discrete sound card. I had to do the same as you for all the same reasons. If your Samsung does 5.1 Dolby I'd suggest a Soundblaster Omni USB Soundcard. Little work to set up, no hassle.

But yeah, you need to spend extra cash. Sorry :(
