Hi guys,

Looking for an Ultrabook with these requirements:

  • SSD (not hybrid)
    Dedicated graphics card
Not Apple, Asus, Alienware or HP
under $2000 AUD and best if in-store not online shops
Has a nice design for general use and does not look like hardcore gaming laptop

Thanks in advance!

Tony.

Hey tony911124,

I really don't know why you are against Asus. You can get a Asus UX303LN (13.3")that has an i7 Processor, a NVIDIA GT840M, and 12 GB of RAM. It weighs only about 3 pounds and is 0.7 inches thick. Screen res is 2550x1440, and has a 256 GB SSD. Best of all, it's only $1299 on amazon.com:

If you really, really, REALLY, don't like Asus, you could get a Dell XPS 15 from the Microsoft Store for $1999:
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Dell-XPS-15-15-8947sLV-Signature-Edition-Laptop/productID.288730000

It has a Quad-Core i7, 16 GB Of RAM, yeah I said 16!!! Also a 512GB SSD and 11 hours of battery life. It also has a...
I'm not sure, though since the new Maxwell GPU's are very power efficient the GTX960M GPU might be the best an ultrabook supports.

It gets tricky trying to find a good GPU in an Ultrabook. In fact, i didn't see much at Lenovo.

*By Ultrabook, please just specify the screen resolution instead since the word "ultrabook" is almost meaningless today. Do you mean 14" or less?

Other:
Also, note that you often need to search to find out if the CPU is a dual, quad or has Hyperthreading. The frequency also matters if comparing. There are "i5" and "i7" mobile CPU's that are only dual-core.

It's possible that for a small "ultrabook" laptop the best you might get is a dual-core with hyperthreading. Here again you are sacrificing some performance for the size of the laptop so think carefully if a 15.6" with quad-core Intel CPU + GTX960M or similar might make more sense for you.

(I'm assuming you want to do some gaming hence the dedicated GPU)

Update:
http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/laptops/asus-zenbook-ux303ln-c4191h-ultrabook-laptop.html

I'm not really sure where the good stores are, but here's one only for REFERENCE. In particular:

a) 8GB main memory
b) 840M (or better) with 2GB of dedicated video memory
c) 120GB SSD or higher
d) res: 1600x900 or higher (I guess "FullHD" means 1920x1080)

Other points:
1) may need to experiment with DPI scaling (off of desktop->resolution)
2) may want a plugin likely to auto-adjust ZOOMING in browsers
3) If 9XXM GPU is available anywhere that's likely better
4) Recommend START8 for Windows 8 but make sure the laptop has Windows 8.1 64-bit

Hope this helps,
